Starting the day off right can make the difference between feeling like you can take on the world, and feeling like you’d rather be buried under it. You know that often overlooked saying, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”? STOP OVERLOOKING IT! It’s true! Breakfast sets your entire day in motion, influencing your physical and mental well-being.

Let’s start with the physical. Starting your day off right with a healthy breakfast kickstarts your metabolism. It aids in digestion, increases your metabolic rate, and decreases the likelihood of weight gain. Breakfast also increases the amount of energy you have throughout the day, and helps you to make healthier food choices. Those who skip breakfast are likelier to be drawn to unhealthy foods that seem more palatable.

Are you familiar with the term ‘hangry’? My fiancé sure is. When I don’t eat, I get hangry. Skipping breakfast, or any meal, puts our stress hormones in motion, elevating irritability and tiredness. Eating breakfast also increases the functionality of neurotransmitters. Your information processing rates increase after a good meal, allowing you to take on the day with sharpness and clarity. When I skip breakfast, I notice that my attention span and social interaction declines. My productivity throughout the day is lessened and my overall happiness and mood is decreased. To ensure that I am a happy, well functioning adult, I make sure to wake up at a good time so I can sit down and have a good breakfast. Green tea optional.

Banana Almond Milk Smoothie with Chia and Hemp

This banana almond milk smoothie with chia and hemp hearts is quick and easy to make. Let’s get to it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 Banana
  • 3 cups Almond Milk
  • 1/2 cup Oats
  • 1 tablespoon Honey
  • 2 teaspoons Hemp Hearts
  • 1 teaspoon Chia
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 dash Cinnamon (if desired)

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to blender and turn blender on high until well blended (approx. 1 min).
  2. Pour into a glass or to go cup and enjoy!
